The field report

This well-known Sandy Hill spot was one of our most requested reviews, and overall, it did not disappoint.

We ordered the NFG Burger, their signature burger, and it was easily the highlight of the meal. The ingredients tasted fresh, the sauces worked really well together (which we wish there was a bit more of), and the bun was soft and fresh. It was one of the better burgers we have reviewed.

The fries were also very good. They were thin, shoestring-style fries, which is exactly the kind we like. The ketchup was also what you want with a good fry: classic ketchup rather than an overly artisanal version that distracts from them.

We also tried the onion rings, even though neither of us normally orders them. We both confidently agreed that they were the best onion rings we have ever had. Please go try them.

The beer itself was very good, although the draught selection was limited to only three options.

Service was the weakest part of the experience. A few parts of the order were incorrect, and we were not given forks, so it felt a little disorganized.

The atmosphere was casual and a little rough around the edges, but it suited the restaurant and the surrounding area.

Overall, we highly recommend this place. The burger was excellent, the sides delivered, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality of food.

A 6.9/10 isn't a bad score, but it wasn't anything to write home about either. To be fair, whiskey sours aren't on their menu, and they were upfront about having to improvise, asking if a workaround was okay before making it. Despite that, it passed one of our biggest tests: it was properly opaque instead of looking like one of those translucent, Buckley's-medicine-style whiskey sours we've been unfortunate enough to drink elsewhere. This one falls into the "improvised" category rather than the "poorly made" category. You could tell it wasn't a drink they regularly make, but given the circumstances, it was a respectable effort.

We both agreed that the food was easily the strongest part of the experience. The NFG Burger had fresh ingredients, a soft bun, great sauces, and plenty of flavour without being overly complicated. The shoestring fries were exactly the style we like, and the onion rings were the biggest surprise of the meal. Neither of us normally orders onion rings, but we both agreed these were the best we have ever had. The beer was very good, although the draught selection was limited to just three options. The service brought the overall experience down slightly. A few parts of the order were incorrect, and we were not given forks. The atmosphere was casual and a little rough around the edges, but it still suited the restaurant. Despite the service issues, the quality and price of the food make this an easy recommendation from both of us. We would return for the burger and onion rings alone.
